2 Corinthians 13:1 “This will be the third time I am coming to you…”
In the last chapter, he mentions that this is the third time he was ready to come to them. The wording into English makes it seem like it was the third time he had gotten ready to go to them, but he meant the third time he had actually gone. He states it plainly here.
1 “…By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.”
Reference to Deuteronomy 19:15. Not sure of his thinking. Seems to just throw this out. Commentary wasn’t much help. I think he’s setting up what he’s going to say next. He’s going to put all things in order, but all will be done as it should be.
3 “since you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, who is not weak toward you, but mighty in you”
Jesus showed weakness or meekness/humility by allowing Himself to be crucified in order to bring us to Him. But now He lives in power and great might, and He will come again in that power. Paul is acting the same way. He has been meek among the Corinthians in the past so as to bring as many to Christ as possible. But now he is going to act with great power and authority to fix what is wrong.
10 “…authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction”
He’s used this phrase before. For edification and not for destruction. His authority as an apostle comes from Christ, and he would rather use it to build up instead of correcting bad behavior.
I hope you enjoy reading and studying His word. May it accomplish what He desires. Please feel free to comment or post questions. Thanks for reading!
