Zechariah 13:1 “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David…”
In the day that the Messiah comes. Israel and the entire world will have a fountain for cleansing of sin.
2 “…I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered…”
Idolatry shall be eliminated. Jews had a problem with idol worship before the exile. Afterward, they replaced physical idols with worshipping the law and religion.
2 “…prophets and the unclean spirit…”
False prophets or false prophesies.
3 “…if anyone still prophesies…”
Makes false prophesies.
3 “…father and mother who begot him shall thrust him through…”
No tolerance for sin, in this case false prophesies. Parents will care more for God and His righteousness than the sinful acts of their children.
4 “…every prophet will be ashamed of his vision…”
Ashamed that he made false prophesies.
5 “…I am no prophet, I am a farmer…”
Won’t even claim to be a prophet anymore, but a simple common worker.
6 “…What are these wounds…Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends”
Odd statements. Commentaries had different ideas. Some suggested wounds gotten from idol worship of which the person was now ashamed. They would now claim they got them from friends instead. Others suggested a reference to Christ who received wounds in His hands from the Jews, supposedly the house of His friends, His people. They support this due to the next verses speaking of the sword against the Shepherd.
7 “…Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered…”
Christ on the cross.
7 “…I will turn My hand against the little ones”
Not sure of this one. KJV says upon the little ones while NKJV and others say against. Not a clear idea of the meaning meant. Some suggest God turns His hands toward the little ones that believed on Christ to protect them. Others that He would allow those who believe to suffer as the Messiah did, persecution from the world.
8-9 “…two-thirds in it shall be cut off…I will bring the one–third through the fire…They will call on My name, And I will answer them…”
Several ideas. End time scenario makes the most sense. Jews are persecuted under the Antichrist. May refer to the remnant that chooses to finally follow Christ. They will be greatly tested during the Tribulation years, but will eventually come through saying Christ is the Lord.
I hope you enjoy reading and studying His word. May it accomplish what He desires. Please feel free to comment or post questions. Thanks for reading!
