Bible Study Notes on Exodus 14:19-31 – 20190103

WritingIIIExodus 14:19  “…Angel of God…”
This alludes to the pre-incarnate Christ as the one who was going before them as the cloud and pillar of fire.  Jesus Himself was leading them.

19  “…the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them”
Instead of leading, it is now behind them, shielding them from the Egyptians while they walk through the sea.

20  “…it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other…”
The same manifestation of God’s power was different things to different people.  Reminds me of what Paul said of Jesus’s death.  Life to those who believe, but death to those who won’t.  Wisdom and foolishness.

22  “…the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left”
Good description of what happened.  Water didn’t drain out somewhere.  It stood up on both sides with a dry strip of land between the walls.  However, it took all night, not quite like we see in the movies.  I think God shows His ownership of creation when He uses natural things to do the miraculous.  Wind would not have created this on its own, or dried out the ground so quickly.  Nor would the water stand up by itself.  But they were all natural aspects of the world, used for His glory.

23  “…the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea…”
You would think they would be smart enough not to do something so stupid.  If there was ever an obvious trap, this was it.  But people blinded by sin can’t see what is right in front of them.

25  “…He took off their chariot wheels…”
I’d forgotten this part.  God didn’t just destroy them in the sea, He actively participated in their demise.  Made it difficult to impossible for them to pursue the Israelites, or get away.

30  “…Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore”
They weren’t just covered up by the sea.  Some of the bodies washed up on the shore.  Gruesome bit of reality for all to see.

31  “…the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD and His servant Moses”
That was the point.  Get rid of the Egyptians and show Himself mighty to His people.  Unfortunately, they had very short memories.  After seeing all of this, it won’t take them long to forget God’s power and His care for them.

I hope you enjoy reading and studying His word.  May it accomplish what He desires.  Please feel free to comment or post questions.  Thanks for reading!
