Not Religious But Spiritual

“I’m not religious, I’m spiritual.”

Have you ever heard someone use that as an answer? It is such a fake statement. It really is. What they mean is, I don’t go to church and have no interest in Jesus Christ, but I want to sound like I have it all together.

The thing is, neither is sufficient, whether you consider yourself religious or spiritual. Religion is nothing more than a poor attempt to reach God, and saying you’re spiritual is saying nothing as all people are designed to be spiritual and to seek it out. All know in their being that there is more to this life than what we see.

Salvation is by grace through faith. Which means it is a total gift of God which you cannot earn or work for. In fact, if anyone says you have to do something for salvation, it is not grace.

And you receive the gift of grace by faith. You simply believe Jesus is who He says He is and that He can and will save you if you just ask. So you ask and then believe He kept His word. That’s the faith.

That’s what it takes to be saved. And it requires neither religion nor super spirituality. It establishes a relationship with the God of the universe and makes you complete.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Proverbs 16:25.

Man wants to be in control. He is built to worship something, and he knows it. So in his sinful state he would rather choose to worship himself or something else he can manipulate.

It all seems to make perfect sense to him, but as Proverbs says, what seems right actually leads to death. And that’s what those claiming religion or spirituality are doing. They’re creating their own way instead of choosing God’s way. It is an attempt to master the need they know they have.

What is the answer to anyone falling into this trap? The same as everything else, the truth.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6.

Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship. It is not man doing something to reach God, it is Jesus doing everything to reach us. He is the only way to bridge the gap between God and man.

Don’t be fooled by religion or simply recognizing your need for the spiritual. Trust Jesus Today.
