Proverbs 28:1 “The wicked flee when no one pursues…”
Selfishness requires self preservation.
2 “…many are its princes…”
Many regime changes due to contending rulers who care nothing for justice or righteousness.
3 “A poor man who oppresses the poor…”
He should know better having been in their situation. The parable of the unforgiving servant who was forgiven much, but wouldn’t forgive his fellow servant little.
4 “Those who forsake the law praise the wicked…”
This is certainly the rule today. Misery loves company.
6 “Better is the poor…”
Another showing character is more important than financial gain. Nothing wrong with money, but it is only a tool to be used by a pure heart.
8 “One who increases his possessions by usury and extortion Gathers it for him who will pity the poor.”
Gathering by evil means. God will still determine where it ends up.
9 “…Even his prayer is an abomination”
Strong words. And warning.
11 “The rich man is wise in his own eyes…”
Revelation. Wealthy and have need of nothing.
13 “He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”
The way God has always worked. Not taking pleasure in the destruction of the wicked nor willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
16 “A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor…he who hates covetousness…”
Can’t do anything right. Not enough intelligence to rule properly, but only in putting others down. Have encountered many managers who fall into this category. Can’t see pass themselves to the task at hand.
17 “A man burdened with bloodshed will flee into a pit; Let no one help him.”
Help him get out of the consequences. But I think we should try to get such a one to see his condition and repent. His life is forfeited here, but he can still gain forgiveness from God for eternity.
19 “He who tills his land will have plenty of bread…”
Not a promise of always a great crop, but rewards of diligence.
20 “A faithful man will abound with blessings…”
Again, not a promise of earthly reward, but a contrast against one who is unfaithful. Certainly a promise of eternal rewards which will be denied to the unfaithful.
21 “To show partiality is not good…”
All men are created equal.
23 “He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue.”
To correct someone for their good has done more for them than simple praise.
24 “Whoever robs his father or his mother…”
We aren’t owed an inheritance. If parents are able to leave something to their children, great. But to believe that you should receive something to the point of taking makes you no better than a common thief.
26 “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool…”
Lean not on thine own understanding.
28 “When the wicked arise, men hide themselves…”
Repeat of the phrase in verse 12. This time with a focus on the wicked.
I hope you enjoy reading and studying His word. May it accomplish what He desires. Please feel free to comment or post questions. Thanks for reading!
